Mt. Sobeak Ojeongju

Ojeongju

Ojeongju Liquor is brewed from five kinds of herbs: Solomon's seal tea, the root of Changchul (Atractylodes japonica Koidzumi), pine leaf, Chinese matrimony root skin, and Cheonmundong (Asparagus cochinchinensis).

Origin of Ojeongju

Ojeongju is mentioned in a literature dating back to 1670, but its origins presumably date far back. Other records, such as Imwon Sipyukji (encyclopedia for farm life, 1827) and Jeungbo Sallim Gyeongje (Revised Farm Management, 1760), also mention Ojeongju.

In the olden days, the nobility enjoyed Ojeongju as a health-boosting medicinal liquor. The secret of brewing the liquor has been preserved for four generations by the Park Chan-jeong family, who lives in Gohyeon-dong, Yeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

Yeongju, the home of the Seonbi or Confucian scholars, presents Buseoksa Temple and Sosu Sewon Confucian Academy, Sogosadang Shrine and Yukudang House in Gohyeon-dong, as well as the pine tree forest and pond in Goejeong-dong,which seem to attest to the fine qualities of the nobilityin the olden days.
