Sosu Seowon Confucian Academy

  • Built by Pungi Governor Ju Se-bung in the 38th year of King Jungjong’s reign of Joseon (1543 AD), Sosu Seowon Confucian Academy was the first-ever Confucian academy and also the first private Confucian academy in Korea. It fostered several renowned Confucian scholars throughout its history, and now it boasts an impressive collection of academic materials.

Overview

Sosu Seowon Confucian Academy, conceived to rebuild the academic order of Confucianism on the brink of collapse in the Joseon Dynasty, was built by Ju Se-bung, the Governor of Punggi, in the 37th year of King Jungjong’s reign of Joseon (1542 AD). It holds particular significance in that it was the first private Confucian academy in Korean history. The Academy produced a number of renowned scholars, and today, it houses countless precious materials that remind us of the importance of academic inquiry and learning. Sosu Seowon Confucian Academy, where each room still lives and breathes the history and the profoundness of learning, is the cradle of scholastic excellence and an education center that champions the values of loyalty, filial piety, propriety, and learning.
