Yeongju is situated 200m above sea level, in the northernmost part of Gyeongsangbuk-do.
It is longer longitudinally and shorter latitudinally.
It is located on the highlands of Mt. Sobaek, where amid Sobaek Mountains stretching southwest, the main peaks of Birobong (1,439m), Gukmangbong (1,421m), and Yeonhwabong (1,394m), and the Jungnyeong Pass borders, connect to Dosolbong Peak (1,315m).
It is bordered by Bonghwa-gun to the east, Danyang-gun in Chungcheongbuk-do to the west, Andong-si and Yecheon-gun to the south, and Yeongwol-gun in Gangwon-do to the north. Yeongju is a traffic hub in the Sobaek-Taebaek area.
Naeseongcheon Stream, which originates in Mt. Bonghwang and the northern mountainous areas, flows through Bonghwa-gun until it reaches Sudo-ri in Musu-myeon. Namwoncheon Stream, which originates in Mt. Sobaek's main peak, Birobong Peak, as well as in Yeonhwabong and Juknyeong Valley, and Jukgyecheon Stream, which originates in Gukmangbong Peak, merge into Seocheon Stream at Gohyeon-dong. Seocheon Stream skirts the city area and flows into Nakdong River. The soil is mostly sandy and clay, allowing diverse crops to grow well.
Notably, the northern mountainous areas, which consist of sandy loam, give it a good drainage, making it suitable for raising ginseng, apples, etc.
